Hydroxylapatite, also called hydroxyapatite (HA), is a naturally occurring mineral form of calcium apatite with the formula Ca5(PO4)3(OH), but is usually written as Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 to denote that the crystal unit cell comprises two entities.

Hydroxylapatite is the hydroxyl endmember of the complex apatite group. The OH− ion can be replaced by fluoride, chloride or carbonate, producing fluorapatite or chlorapatite. It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system. Pure hydroxylapatite powder is white. Naturally occurring apatites can, however, also have brown, yellow, or green colorations, comparable to the discolorations of dental fluorosis.

Hydroxyapatite powder  is great raw-material for versatile use. Nano hydroxyapatite can help teeth remineralization which prevent cavities. The currently recognized components that can promote tooth remineralization are fluorine and hydroxyapatite. This has been confirmed in double-blind experiments in medical institutions, In Situ and In Vitro experiments.

The chemical composition of hydroxyapatite is highly consistent with the inorganic components found in human bones and teeth. It constitutes approximately 65% of human bone, 70% of dentin, and as much as 95% of tooth enamel. With its excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity, it can form chemical bonds with host tissues at the interface. It is slightly soluble in the human body, releasing ions that are harmless and can participate in the body’s metabolic processes. Additionally, it stimulates or induces bone growth, promoting the repair of damaged tissues. These properties make medical grade hydroxyapatite an ideal material for manufacturing synthetic bone nails ,bone screws,orthopedic pins as well as artificial bones,bone scaffolds, and related products.

Besides, Medical grade hydroxyapatite microspheres can be used as biocompatible coating powder coated on the surface of orthopedic titanium implants by thermal spraying to improve osseointegration. Furthermore, spherical hydroxyapatite can also be used in 3D Biopriting to produce  patient-specific cartilage for nose or ear reconstruction, and synthetic bone scaffolds to repair defects from trauma or disease.

What’s more, hydroxyapatite microspheres with 25-45um particle size can be used as medical aesthetics materials to make dermal fillers for smoothing wrinkles. 25-45um smooth calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres provided by EPRUI Biotech has smooth surface can be an affordable substitute to calcium phosphate microspheres provided by Merz Aesthetics.
